Day 42 of 90: 5 Foods that Can Rev Up your Metabolism


Having already blogged on carbs (link), high protein sources (link) and meats (link) I thought I might as well stick with the food theme. So today I’m going to look at 5 foods, that I eat regularly, that help burn fat by quickening your metabolism.

1. Chilli: I have this on every meal, except breakfast, that is. Chilli is great for blood circulation and can boost you metabolism by up to 25% for a 3 hour period. The dried flakes are best but the sauce is good too, but watch out for the salt and sugar content.

2. Citrus fruit: Grapefruit (don’t add sugar), lemons (I add to most meals) and oranges are a fantastic way to get vitamin C AND up your metabolic rate.

3: Porridge Oats: Now look let’s forget all the instant oats with cookie dough and raisins. The humble oats are a staple for me. There cheap, easy to cook, tasty, low in calories, filled with nutritional goodness and help burn fat…Now that’s a food stuff people.

4. Cruciferous Vegetables (and you knew what that meant too, right?): Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts are not only good for your heart but they make you…(well let’s just say there full of fibre and that boasts your metabolic rate).

5. Raspberries: Ok you’ve probably heard that fruit is full of sugar. Firstly, it’s a different type of sugar than from your morning doughnut and secondly, I wouldn’t worry unless you were going on a 3 week fruit detox (even then it is probably more likely to rot your teeth than do your body any harm, well, unless your a diabetic…Que snotty comment from a dentist with diabetes). Anyway, not only do raspberries help you lose weight around the mid-section but can help with the prevention/cure of cancer and colds…PS Fresh ones can be expensive but the frozen ones are cheap and available in any supermarket, eat frozen or stick in a cup/pot to defrost.

Bonus – Green Tea: Green tea tastes pretty nasty but you can now get it with other natural flavours these days which is actually quite good and adds additional benefits. I drink it regularly but the best time to drink it is 30 minutes after a meal. However, I have also heard some people say that oolong tea is like green tea on steroids so I’m going to have to check that out (and let you know) but I drink at least 3 cups of the green tea a day.

FOOD LOG (no food from 7pm till post- workout)
Post-Workout: all-in-one shake
Breakfast: oats, raspberries and banana
Snack: 2 homemade turkey burgers
Lunch: bento box with some chicken stir fry followed by a tablespoon of peanut butter


Snack: tangerine and tablespoon of peanut butter
Snack: cup of raspberries
Dinner: salmon stir-fry and oriental salad
Evening Shake: whey shake
Snack: handful of strawberries

Note to self: feeling tired today. I don’t know if I’m getting enough rest or if I have to up the food intake. Hopefully it will pass.
